Frequently Asked Questions Click on a question below for the answer. I was shown how to reverse park by an instructor, but my dad said his way is better. What do I do? Tough one! The ability to reverse park parallel safely, meeting the standard required by Qld Transport is the primary concern. If you are able complete the manoeuvre to that standard using dad's method, great! Just show the instructor and if it was me, I would be chuffed at your progress! My daughter is not at all confident behind the wheel so we struggle to keep her interested in obtaining a license. She is going to need it for work so what can we do? Tell her she will have to pay for a chauffer or get a boyfriend to run her around!! Seriously, I come across this as often as brown snakes in my back paddock! New Driver has a structured learning process and through the district I have available a number of safe and quiet areas as the starting place. We start with real-time hazard recognition on the way, then on arrival it's basic vehicle safety, vehicle familiarity, cockpit drill, moving-off and stopping etc, etc. Sometimes it is a whole lesson before we (student and I) feel comfortable to move out onto a quiet road and so on. I love helping this type of student. I would like to get an auto license but dad says a manual license is better? Can be a common dilema when the family has an auto or both. Back when I was a teen (EH Holdens and studded belts!) autos were scarcer and much more expensive, and manual licenses were the go. Nowadays autos are everywhere and a lot of the later models have "selectomatic" boxes anyway which allow manual changes (with an automatic clutch). My experience is that learner drivers who overcome the initial difficulties of "a busy manual cockpit", will have the best of both worlds when gaining their license. Having said that, some drivers find their comfort zone is with an auto,so do it! Do you come to Atherton? Yes we do. Whether you live in Atherton or somewhere else, Atherton has the busy traffic conditions necessary for L-platers in the later stages of their learning process. For this reason we teach in Atherton almost daily. I failed my driving test for not looking for trains at a level crossing, when I know there are no trains anymore and there is grass on the track! Well, if there was a GIVEWAY sign on the crossing guess what?? You must treat it as a normal regulatory Giveway signed intersection!!! Some crossings have - Look For Trains - before the crossing sign, telling you in advance to look! I am a concerned parent of a 15yo son. Soon he will be able to get a learner's license and want me to supervise his driving. I am not the person to be teaching him but a driving instructor cannot supervise without costing a fortune? Perhaps we can help! Your situation is not uncommon, driving in today's enviroment has changed from past years and pressures on the learners today are certainly greater. New Driver has a programme called "Super-Drive", designed for parent and "soon to be learner" where we can give valuable information and techniques enabling safer and enjoyable tuition by parents. Do I need a driving school car for my test? Hell no! The family banger will do as long as it is in roadworthy condition (the examiner will quickly check all lights and glance at the rego prior to the test). A lot of learners (and especially their nervous parents) like to use the instructor to "polish up" skills with a revision lesson just prior to the test and then use the school car in the test. It isn't a bad idea. I was told by a friend that you are not allowed to use your mirrors for reversing? Using your mirrors to reverse is a kick-butt skill! But is not safe for a public road, street or especially a driveway! The only way you can have proper safe control of a reversing car, is by looking through the rear window, watching both sides of the car for some unsuspecting pedestrian or animal. Keep the mirrors for the paddock or at the tip with the trailer, even then a person to guide is the way to go!!! I will soon have to take the hazard perception test so I can go to my green p plates. what is it and can you test me? The HPT as it is called, is a simulator test of multiscreen scenarios, and you must clear each one to move to the next one. Pass all screens successfully and you win (your green P's that is). Oh, you must also cough up $15 for the test. Yes New Driver is a testing centre so give us a call. My mate is buying a V6 holden to learn and drive on P's. Is this ok? Perfect car, as long as it does not have more than 200 kilowatts under the hood! Best to have a look at the rules about vehicle restrictions for learners etc before buying something. I have reached my 100 hours and wish to book a test. What do I have to do? Congratulations! Next you have to hand the logbook in to the post office and wait for notice (after it is checked for correctness) that you can go ahead and book. Then ring 132390 and book in or you can ring us 40 966 999 and we will take care of it for you. Good luck! I go to school and so can you give me a lesson around school times? Sure! Provided you are reasonably close to town I'll pick you up at home and you can finish at school, or I'll meet you after school and you can finish at home! You could even break out during the day too!!! |
